A few weeks ago I’d been asked by otelo if I’m interested in testing a sim card. Due to the fact that I’m often en route I was hooked on from the first moment.

To be honest I’d often been looking for a chance to work beside fully loaded wireless LANs within the last years. Enjoying a cup of coffee and working at the same time is often not possible without a mobile hotspot and although my phone did a good job as mobile backup I had to look for another solution. Unfortunately mobile web is still expensive in Germany or at least you only receive small data packets wherefore I hadn’t bought a surf stick before.

otelo tries to make an exception here. Beside D-network quality (7,2 Mbit/s) they offer a 1GB mobile network package for at less than 10,-€. If you have to be more busy within the next 30-days you can buy a 3GB package for only 19,99 € which is a real cut price.

As I mentioned before otelo asked me to test their prepaid surf sim. Within the last days I worked in cafes, checked my mails in the tube and also compared prices while shopping and everything worked out. The data transfer is as fast as expected and the network coverage is fine too. But to be honest that’s what I expected from the Düsseldorf based telecommunications provider.

Escaping Munich …

Although the weather wasn’t meant to be good within the last days we decided to visit Lindau and one day later Neuschwanstein Castle. ‘Lindau is a major Bavarian town and an island on the eastern side of Lake Constance, a freshwater lake called Bodensee in German.’ 1 The city is near the borders of Austria and Switzerland and the harbour entrance is also the entrance to Bavaria. Therefore the entrance is also manned by the Bavarian Lion. Lindau or more precisely Lindau island is really beautiful and if you’re into ice cream there are several delicious stores.

Hi Ludiwg, hi Walt …

Neuschwanstein Castle on the contrary surely must not be introduced. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869. Shortly after Ludwig’s death in 1886 the building had been opened to the public. ‘Since then more than 61 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer.’ 2 Therefore Neuschwanstein Castle is one of Germany’s main highlights. Last but not least Walt Disney had been so impressed by the castle that it was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Testing the sim card in the middle of nowhere …

To return to my principal point testing a mobile network in a city like Munich is as easy as taking candy from a baby wherefore I had my laptop and my tablet with me during the trips. Nevertheless if I’d been listening to the Lion King theme with the Bavarian Lion or checking my account balance for a potential membership at Lindau’s yacht club the mobile network was working. Also Ludwig would have been able to check the football results with the otelo sim card. It just worked fine.

Thanks otelo for the chance to test your sim card and mobile network and please plug along.
