KISS – Destroyer (Music of my life #MOML)

At the age of twelve my parents took me to my first festival. We visited my grandma, who is living near the German border to Luxembourg and drove later in the evening to the Nürburgring racetrack. Although I’d already been several times on the racetrack I hadn’t known that a festival takes place there. A festival called Rock am Ring.

Marek Lieberberg founded the RaR in 1985, the same year I was born. Up to 2014 the festival took place at the racetrack and up to then inter alia had been able to call David Bowie, Aerosmith, RATM, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Metallica and Kiss their headliner. The latter one had been the main reason why I, at the age of twelve, had been gifted with a ticket.

It’s called metal because it’s harder than rock.

My stepdad is a huge heavy metal and therefore also Kiss fan. I guess at the age of seven or eight I got in contact with Kiss and although I hadn’t been able to understand their songs I liked their energy. The band around Paul Stanley, the Starchild, and Gene Simmons, the Demon, who really acts like a demon instead of Ozzy, really got my attention.

Although one of my favourite tracks is Love Gun, Destroyer1 is the album I enjoy most. Detroit Rock City, which is also the theme of the movie, still seems like a hymn to me. The people of 1976, the year when their 4th studio album had been released, must have gone crazy I guess. Already after a few seconds when the drums join the guitar I can start headbanging. Shout it out loud and King of the night time world e.g. have the same energy and are airguitar-must-play songs. God of Thunder is the perfect song for Simmons whereby Beth by Peter Criss is a wonderful counterpart.

Their concert at 97’s Rock am Ring hadn’t been the only one I attended. Up to now I’ve seen Kiss live maybe four times. During our trip through South America they’ve been on tour too but unfortunately I haven’t been able to catch them in Buenos Aires. After a job in Barcelona I returned to Munich on a Friday afternoon. Kiss should play the next day at the RockAvaria but I had no ticket. Karma might be a b*tch but maybe not because by fluke the organiser called me the next day and invited me to a media relations job.

Right now I’m listening to Rock and roll all nite which appears on Sonic Boom, but Destroyer never the less is my personal favourite.
